Let's make a ROCKET

My group's attempt at the rocket experiment yielded some interesting results.

Materials

  • One Liter of Diet Coke (full)

  • One Liter of Diet Coke (empty)

  • Mentos

  • a string

Procedure:

1. First drink a tiny amount of the diet coke so its not completely filled.

2. Now find an empty diet coke liter bottle and cut in half

3. Use the piece cut in half and put it under the bottle with soda, using it as a type of launch pad

4. Now grabs a Mentos and poke a hole through it.

5. Fasten the string through the Mentos and position it so its dangling over the liquid.

6. When you are ready flip the bottle over and a reaction should occur

HERE IS A VIDEO OF OUR REACTION: https://youtu.be/S7Y3bGMU6jk

Analysis:

For my group the rocket started to go high then tipped over and the reaction was over. I believe the rocket was able to launch to begin with because when the coke reacted with the mentos the pressure increased so the volume had to increase as well. This relates back to Boyle's law because it states that if either pressure or volume increase or decrease the other one must as well. If there was one thing I could do to change to experiment, I would try to do a better job of flipping the bottle because that is a large reason why we did not get a good reaction.
